Origins and peculiarities of cycads

The cycads regroup 107 species of the family of cycads, scattered in the hot countries of East Africa to Southeast Asia. They are found in Madagascar or New Caledonia, in the Great African Rift or in Tonga… This is why the cycads evoke holidays and tropical paradises, are acclaimed in the south or around the pools! The cycads are especially one of the oldest shrub plants still present on the planet. Venerable old ladies, therefore, who grow slowly, but long, and transform into trees several meters high in their natural habitat.

Please note that there is no question of bringing them back in the suitcases: all cycad species are protected by CITES, the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora. Last detail to know, these shrubs are poisonous: you don't touch them without washing your hands and you closely monitor children or pets.

Plantation of cycads

The cycads is a plant of the hot countries and supports badly the cold. To plant it outdoors, we first ask about the species, some hardy varieties tolerating lower temperatures, like cycas revoluta. If in doubt, it is better to reserve the cycad plantation in the garden in hot regions and temperate climates. If the climate is too chilly, however, you can easily grow a cycads in a pot à interior, you just have to take it out on the terrace when the weather arrives to enjoy it all summer long

As for planting it well, drainage is the key! In the ground, a good size hole is dug, a layer of clay, pebbles or gravel is deposited there to facilitate the evacuation of water. Once the cycads are installed, we then re-fill with a mixture of half earth, half compost or potting soil to enrich. All between March and April or October and November. Potted, beware of size of cycads : he must be comfortable, especially as he will grow. So we choose a pot of good size, we place there again clay balls or pebbles then we repot cycads with a classic potting soil for green plants.

Cycas maintenance

Once well planted, the cycads will grow quietly, at their own pace. A shrub planted in the ground requires almost no maintenance, a simple annual surfacing with enrichment like compost sufficient to boost it. In a pot, the cycads growth requires regular repotting in a larger pot, every two to three years on average. The rest of the time, it needs water and sun: if its location suits it and the watering is well proportioned, it flourishes easily.

Watering the cycads

Watering cycads is one of its two essential survival conditions, the second being brightness. Cycads love humidity but hate excess ... in other words, we water it rather little and regularly than a lot at once. The higher the temperature and the more sunshine, the more water it needs. In spring and summer, watering every two or three days is often necessary. In winter, once a week or every two weeks is sufficient. The right reflex? We touch. If the soil is dry for several centimeters, the plant is thirsty, we water.

Diseases of cycads

Rustic and resistant, the cycads is not very susceptible to diseases. Its leaves can sometimes warp if the plant lacks water or sun, especially for cycads in pot. In this case, we try to place it in a place more exposed to the sun and increase the watering rate, without flooding it. Leaves that turn yellow and fall are a normal phenomenon in the leaf renewal cycle, no need to worry! And if the phenomenon persists, again, it is generally a problem of exposure or watering.
